Moeller Zinc Primer Aerosol Spray works great on aluminum surfaces above or below the waterline. This power primer etches into the aluminum, forming a strong surface/primer union that is resistant to corrosion. Choose the color that contrasts least with the topcoat you intend to apply over the primer.
For steel and iron surfaces, especially welded joints, above or below the water line, use Zinc Cold Galvanizing or Zinc Phosphate. This corrosive barrier contains a high percentage (95%) of zinc, for maximum resistance against solvents & abrasions.

Can I apply this to my Isuzu Marine Diesel Engine in my sailboat (50 hp 4 cyl). Part of the engine is aluminum the remainder steel?
I have used this primer on both steel and aluminum with excellent results.Now, the disclaimer: I use zinc bearing primer on aviation applications, not marine. I have no experience with marine applications. The primer works well for my applications.I hope this has been of some help.

I need to topcoat the zinc chromate primer with an epoxy primer. Are they compatable? The primers are being applied to a 4130steel tubing aircraft fuselage frame.
I used the zinc chromate top coated with epoxy paint for a marine application,and it worked very well. This is under the waterline on an aluminum drives.
Bob,I bought the primer for exactly the same reason you did; 4130 chrome molly tube welded fuselage.I just used the zinc chromate primer as the only primer and sprayed an enamel on top of it. 2 years later (and still not flying!) the paint job looks good. I also used the ZC primer for the aluminum parts where I thought primer was called for.disclaimer: I am no expert on anything, just working through trying to build an airplane.
Based on my technical expertise (I am an artist painter) I believe that the epoxy primer (the kind used for below the water line)will be compatible with the zinc chromate but i cannot prove it because I never done it this way. May i ask why use zinc chromate as a substrate? The epoxy primer itself could have accomplished as much and more from the get go. The epoxy primer is less permeable by moisture if not completely water proof while zinc chromate as far as I understand is permeable.

Mike: the difference is in how they bond with the metal they are applied to. I found two easy to understand PDFs explaining how each works. Google "What is cold galvanizing" and look for the article "What exactly is cold galvanizing". Then, Google "What is zinc phosphate primer" and look for a similarly titled PDF. I can give you the web site because its a paint manufacturer and Jamestown won't allow me to send a message containing a brand name. I found both easy to understand and I'm no chemist. Hope this helps.
cold galvanizing if you don't want to topcoat with paint if so I believe Phosphate can be top coated. Below the water line I would go with a 2 part such as Interlux Interprotect Primer or watertite or both since it will waterproof the steel followed by a antifouling Paint.
I USED THE ZINC CHROMATE PRIMER ON ALUMINUM OUTDRIVE THAT HAD LOWER UNIT PAINT WORN OFF AND REQUIRED PAINTING. I FIRST USED WEST SYSTEMS ALUMINUM ETCHING (TWO PART) AND USED CHROMATE PRIMER FOLLOWED BY OMC COLOR TOP COAT( MOELLER). FINISHED PRODUCT LOOKS GREAT AND HAS, SO FAR, SHOWN NO ISSUES. SINCE TOP COAT WAS ONE PART PAINT, I WOULD WAIT A WEEK, OR SO, TO ALLOW COMPLETE DRYING BEFORE IMMERSION AND/OR WATER FRICTION AS BOAT CAN DEVELOP AT HIGHER SPEEDS. HAPPY WITH RESULTS.
