Interlux Toplac

Interlux Toplac is a premium one-part high gloss paint finish that uses Silicone Copolymer Resin technology to deliver silky smooth brush application and fantastic flow and leveling characteristics. Its unique chemical structure enables Toplac to yield a long lasting, high definition gloss and a mirror-like finish. UV stabilized for increased durability and will retain its color and gloss up to 3 times longer than conventional topside finishes.

Toplac can be used on fiberglass and suitably primed epoxy, wood and metal surfaces for hullsides and accent stripes. Use Toplac anywhere above the true waterline when long lasting performance and ease of application are desired.

In 2004 Practical Sailor and Powerboat Reports magazines gave Interlux Toplac their highest recommendation, based on a two-year topside paint durability test.

Thinning To ease application in warm or windy conditions, add up to 10% of Brushing Liquid 333. For spraying or to improve drying in cold weather conditions add Special Thinner 216. Thin 10-25% with Special Thinner 216 to a viscosity or 18-22 secs (B4 cup) or 16-20 secs (DIN4).

Cleaner Bare Fiberglass - Fiberglass Solvent Wash 202.

Ventilation and Humidity Control Apply in dry, well ventilated conditions.

Airless Spray Pressure: 170 bar/2500 psi. Tip Size: 0.33-0.41 mm/13-16 thou.

Conventional Spray Pressure Pot: Pressure: 3.44-4.47 bar/50-65 psi (gun pressure); 8-10 psi (pot pressure). Tip Size: 0.89-1.4 mm/35-50 thou. Siphon Cup: Pressure: 3.44-4.47 bar/50-65 psi - gun pressure. Tip Size: 1.5-1.8 mm/60-70 thou.

Other For lighter colors, mix the first coat of finish 50:50 with the undercoat to improve the depth of color and opacity. For best results when applying by roller, smooth off with a pad or brush.

Toplac vs Brightsides

We recently repainted a 32' wood Grand Banks and we tested both Brightsides as well as Toplac and we decided that Toplac definitely flowed out better and gave a more "sprayed" final finish without any brush strokes. Several secrets-- get a case of small canning glass jars at a market. Open the Toplac and pour immediately into each of four glass jars to the top and close tightly and then store upside down. When I'm ready to paint I paint right out of one of these jars and try to prep enough area to use most of one jar. Paint that sits in the can half empty or if the can is left open loses solvents and changes character. We would keep a second jar with 333 to dip the brush in when the paint stops flowing well from the brush also. If your prep is good and you use a nice brush and brush it carefully-- not too thick and not too thin- you will get a brushless glass like surface with Toplac. Great paint. One last tip- only paint in the summer after the morning dew has evaporated when the wind is very light. Weather made a huge difference. Painting late in the afternoon will not let the paint cure before the increased humidity in the late afternoon or evening destroys the shine of the paint.
