Interlux Interdeck Polyurethane Non-Skid Deck Coating

Interlux Interdeck Polyurethane Non-Skid Deck Coating is an excellent, easy to apply slip resistant polyurethane finish for decks. Interdeck contains a fine aggregate and will apply easily on all substrates. Interdeck provides a low sheen finish that helps protect against dazzle from sunlight reflected off decks. A tough polyurethane resin protects decks against everyday wear and tear. Interdeck is suitable for all substrates.

Preparation

BARE FIBERGLASS

In Good Condition: Begin by scrubbing well using soap and water and a stiff brush. Rinse with fresh water and allow to dry. Wipe a small area with a clean rag that has been wetted with Fiberglass Solvent Wash 202. While the surface is still wet, wipe with a clean, dry rag. Continue this process until the entire surface has been cleaned. Sand using 180-220 grade (grit) paper. Remove sanding residue.

MOLDED IN NON-SKID SURFACES

Scrub with Fiberglass Surface Prep YMA601 or Solvent Wash 202V using a 3M Doodlebug™ and a maroon Scotch-Brite® pad. Rinse with fresh water.

PREVIOUSLY PAINTED SURFACES

In Good Condition: The surface must be clean and dry. Sand with 220-320 grade (grit) paper. Remove sanding residue.

In Poor Condition: Remove all previous coatings and prime the substrate.

BARE WOOD

Sand surface, wipe clean. Apply Prekote Primer. Sand surface, wipe clean.

METAL

Use Interprotect 2000E to prime the surface of the prepared metal. See the Interprotect 2000E Technical Datasheet for bare metal preparation guidelines.

CLEAR EPOXY

Clean as for Bare Fiberglass above. Sand with 80 grade (grit) paper. Remove sanding residue. Apply one coat of Epoxy Primekote 404/414.

Method

Sand the primer with 180-220 grade wet or dry paper. Remove dust with a dust wipe. Apply 1-2 coats.

I used Interdeck in accordance with the instructions on the can. I first prepped by sanding, applying Interlux PreKote and waited over the weekend. Then rolled a coat of Interdeck on. With the daytime temps in the 90s, I waited a day for drying as prescribed by the can but it wasn't dry. After 3 days it was still soft in spots. It took a full week for the paint to dry in 90 degree temps. After contacting Interlux, they decided I need to scuff the paint as it may skimmed over too quickly to release some of the solvents. A second coat was required and the drying process was over a week. I'm still not confident if a slid an ice chest across my cockpit that the paint wouldn't come up. If I had it to do over again I would use a two part epoxy paint so that the curing would at least be a chemical process. The one part polyurethane is a risk in my opinion and I would not recommend it. I'll have to wait and see how well the paint holds up but for now I think I would spend the money for a better Interlux product or a different brand.

Comments about Interlux Interdeck Polyurethane Non-Skid Deck Coating:

I researched many nonskid deck paints before settling on this one. I first thought it was not a nonskid paint once it dried (and it dried very quickly) because I could not see any grit. But the grit is fine like a 1200 grit emory paper. Your shoes grab it like glue with no sliding. It does not tear up the feet of a barefoot sailor either. It goes on easily and covers well in one coat. What more could you ask for in a nonskid deck paint? Two thumbs up from this sailor!!!

My entire boat is painted with Interlux. The Interdeck Non-Skid went on easily. Stained Easily. Didn't Clean Easily. I chose grey - MISTAKE - very hot deck in the Florida sun. Repainted the deck with Interlux Brightsides Blu-Glow White Paint, Interlux Polymeric non-skid beads & Interlux Flattener. P

Comments about Interlux Interdeck Polyurethane Non-Skid Deck Coating:

For 3 years I made the mistake of using Interlux Interdeck on my non-slip surfaces on my Sailboat. I've never seen a paint so easily (and permanently) stained, so difficult to clean, and so prone to wear. The Interlux Brightsides with the added polymeric non-skid beads are VASTLY superior to Interlux's Interdeck Non-Skid product...no comparison.

        STAINING:
My biggest frustration with their lousy Interdeck product is that it STAINS so incredibly easy (bird poo, spilled beverages, shoe marks, etc). Brightsides has a Teflon additive that I've found is VERY easy to clean. Brightsides normally has a high-gloss finish, but if you add their polymeric non-skid additive it turns into a nice semi-gloss/satin finish which is so good that I literally sprayed my entire top deck with it since I walk virtually everywhere on it.

        DURABILITY:
The durability of the Brightsides is much, much better as the Interdeck product needed yearly application just to keep up which is just too expensive and time-consuming. Deep power-washing (which is what you'll need to do with decks coated in non-skid of any kind to keep them clean) REALLY took a toll on the Interdeck product but doesn't even phase the more durable Brightsides paint.

        SLIPPAGE:
Because I was able to mix my OWN bead-to-paint ratio rather than having it pre-mixed, I have what I feel is superior coverage of non-slip surface on my deck. I sprayed the ENTIRE top deck with 3 coats using an automotive sprayer and added the polymeric beads to the paint BEFORE I sprayed each coat. I added the maximum 6oz per gallon of polymeric beads as recommended. The beads are worth the money and don't even think of using sand!

        COLOR:
The whitest shade of the Interdeck looks an off-white color (similar to Brightsides "white"), whereas Brightsides has the brightest white available ("blue glo" white) which will make all of your neighbors exceedingly jealous.

I will NEVER use the Interdeck product again, but I'm heartily recommending Brightsides!

Comments about Interlux Interdeck Polyurethane Non-Skid Deck Coating:

Put this on my boat for racing in SF bay, lots of wind and lots of water. Had people comment on how slippy the deck was (some super experienced sailors) after using this paint, then added interlux grit to remedy the situation - still not a touch on the kiwi grip decks. The particles in iy may just be too fine. those particle also pick up and hold dirt however very effectively.

Comments about Interlux Interdeck Polyurethane Non-Skid Deck Coating:

I used this on the recommendation of the Anchorage in RI for the inside of a 40 year old Dyer Midget dinghy that I restored. Super easy to apply, and looks great. Quick scrub of the boat, two coats, excellent adhesion, nice uniform spread. Couldn;t be happier...but the color is VERY YELLOW. I used "Cream" thinking off-white, but it is not even close to that. Its a dinghy, Im not going to change it - but when I repaint in the future, will not use this color.

Incidentally, I have dropped a number of tools in the boat and like all non-skid it grabs dirt as well as your feet - but cleans up easy enough. Certainly no need to add any additional non-skid.

I cleaned the nonskid on my 1982 Allmand deck with dishwashing detergent. Then I rubbed it down with acetone. I rolled the deck. The paint went down evenly, covering well. The color was consistent and the surface was uniform. I went back a couple of days later, did some touch up and put a second coat on high traffic areas. It looks great. Taping is a problem, of course, but careful work generates great results. I am extremely happy. It dressed my old girl up beautifully.

One quart covered the deck and cockpit of my 17 foot sailboat. Application was easy. Coverage was very good. Durability is not yet known. The white is a bright white but has no glare. This is the flattest flat paint I have used. Once the boat was prepped and the weather looked good, it took about 2 hours to completely paint the deck. The paint covered the embossed non-slip surface easily without filling the embossed portions. I cannot address the durability of the paint since I painted the boat this week.
