Prior to application, surfaces to be painted must be free of all dirt, peeling paint, rust, oil, grease, wax and other interfering
Wash with soap, ammonia and water. Let dry, then clean thoroughly with Z*Spar T-1132 Fiberglass Prep
Solution. Sand with 220 grit sandpaper. Clean off sanding dust thoroughly by vacuuming and/or airblasting followed by
wiping with a clean tac-rag. If surface is slightly rough or porous, prime with Z*Spar 105 White Undercoater.
All existing painted surfaces in good firm condition should be lightly sanded. All existing paint in poor
condition (cracked, blistered, peeling) must be removed and surfaces treated as new.
New or Bare Wood
Surfaces must be sanded with 180-220 grit sandpaper. Remove sanding dust by vacuuming and/
or airblasting followed by wiping with a clean tac-rag. Surfaces should then be sealed with Z*Spar S-120 Clear Sealer.
After the sealer has dried, apply one coat of Z*Spar 105 White Undercoater. Sand undercoater with 220 grit sandpaper
before applying Z*Spar Topside Enamel.
Sand with 180-220 grit sandpaper. Clean off sanding dust before applying paint. Apply one coat of Z*Spar
P-707 Prime-All Primer before applying Topside Enamel. Z*Spar 105 White Undercoater can be used over P-707 Prime-
All Primer for smoothing surfaces if desired.
Surfaces must be well sandblasted or sanded to remove all millscale and rust. Then apply 2 coats of Z*Spar P-
646 or 340 Gold Epoxy Primer. Z*Spar 105 White Undercoater can be used over P-646 or 340 Gold for smoothing
surfaces if desired. NOTE: When removing sanding dust from a sanded surface, DO NOT use thinner solvent, gasoline
or a dirty rag. DO use a tac-rag, vacuum, air blast or a clean dry cloth. NOTE: If filling or fairing of nonsubmerged
surface is required use #1 or #2 White Glazing Putty after the first coat of 105 White Undercoat.
Brush, roller, conventional or airless spray. For brush application reduce with approximately 5-10% T-10
Thinner, or T-11 Thinner in excessively hot weather and apply in full wet coats. For spray application thin with 15-20% T-
8 Thinner and spray on two coats approximately 15-20 minutes apart. The first coat should be a light coat and the
second coat should be a medium coat. If the second coat cannot be applied within 20 minutes, allow an overnight dry
between coats. An alternate spray method would be to apply two full coats allowing a 24 hour drying time between
coats and sanding with 280-320 grit sandpaper prior to the final coat.

How long does the gloss hold up? Would I be looking at painting every couple of years using this? Thanks!
You can expect the shine to last three or four years with normal exposure.Repainting every two to three years is about right on a sound wooden hull.
For exterior use on a boat stored outdoors, the gloss should hold up for at least 2 years, possibly 3.
You should expect to get a few years of good gloss. You can increase longevity by reducing the UV exposure, but if you intend to do a maintenance coat every couple of years this should not be an issue.

can z-spar semi-gloss and gloss be mixed together in equal parts for a compromise between semi-gloss and gloss?
I am not a chemist, nor have I tried what you are suggesting - but I don't think mixing the two should cause any issues.
Can this be applied over urathane?
Painted Surfaces: If the old paint is in good, sound condition, sand it thoroughly smooth with 120-150 grit paper; solvent clean to remove residue, then proceed with the first coat of Shipendec. If the old paint is in poor condition, remove it with a paint and varnish remover or by sanding. Proceed with instructions for the appropriate bare surface system.
Would this be good for painting a refrigerator that is stained?
I can't say that I've painted a refrigerator with it - but for fiberglass it goes on nicely. If you have some Z-Spar laying around, it can't hurt to try. Otherwise, I'd imagine you could find a more economical option, as this particular paint is formulated to do much more than you need for your project (for example, stand up to the sun and UV rays). That is exactly how I painted my boat, no problem. I used one coat over a very rough and worn fiberglass hull. This paint held up fine (fresh water) for two years and looked great when I sold the boat at the end of the two years.
I bought this paint in September 2011 for use on my (100-yr old Colonial) house trim, so I don't have any direct hands-on experience...my painting contractor did the actual work. As best as I can recall he applied two finish coats. I believe that sanding between coats is advised to obtain a smoother finish and to improve adhesion. I expect that this finish will last 5-7 years. I will be ordering more of this brand soon for use on my replacement Douglass Fir shutters.
I used this product to finish cabinets indoors using a roller and tipping with a brush. Depending on the temperature you may need to do some thinning otherwise it was fairly easy to work with. If you have a good primed surface in a low use area one coat should cover if this is new wood I would use two and sand with 320 grit between coats. It seems very durable and would expect two years before re painting. I would waited overnight to recoat.

I used this product and was really impressed with its look and durability. I also rolled it on. If you use a brush, I suggest a good quality one. The better the brush, the less likely you will see the brush strokes. I usesd white paint over the old tan finish, and two coats is all I used. I didn't sand between coats. I also did mine 3 years ago and it's held up well. And as far as between coats, I waited about a hour or so...good luck
My sailboat is still in the original gel coat. I used this product for a stripe slightly above the water line. (Salt water) I had cleaned the entire hull so the surface was spotless. I taped off my stripe location, with green tape, and applied two coats with a small roller. I let the 1st coat dry in the hot Florida temperatures overnight. I used a fine sponge sander the next afternoon, tacked it down, and then rolled the second coat. It flowed perfectly and shined like a spray finish. That was 3 or 4 years ago, and I see no signs of it giving up yet! I have some gel-coat cracks that I need to fix on deck, and soon afterwards I will have to paint the deck. I would not hesitate to use this brand of paint.
how can i tint this paint?
I would probably get some J.E. Moser's oil soluble aniline dye from woodworker_com. I have used the water soluble version mixed into waterborne polyurethane with very nice results. I have been painting my wooden sloop for the past thirty years with Z-spar white 99,100 and will sell my boat when I can no longer get z-spar. J.E.Moser provides the water soluble, as well as, alcohol soluble, and oil soluble powders. So, I might try a little of the oil soluble version if I were tinting.
I don't know about the tinting? I bought GLOSS BLACK for a waterline stripe. It went on easy with a small roller and three years later, it is still bright and glossy. My boat stays in the Florida water year round... pending a hurricane.
What is the difference between the solid coat gloss white and the gloss white?
Excellent question, and the answer is that the "Solid Coat 99" is a very slightly blue tinted white, so when the sun hit's it, it turns white instead of yellowing, also it has more titanium which gives it better coverage over existing colors (For example: Painting a white over a black will require less coats), thank you.
Is Z-spar available in other colors and or capable of being tinted. I am looking for N0.87 Shell Ivory, a Z*color at one time. Can you point me in a direction where buy I might be able to find out about it? In the meantime I'll try Petit ship and deck...thanks

Hi, I know nothing about Z-spar colors, but used Z-spar on a 12 ft sharpie I built.Very disappointed. Hard to apply, too shiny. Sanded it all off and used Kirby paint instead. Much easier to use, nice finish. I highly recommend it.Dory Rice

50 Years as Best for Wooden Boats.
I've used this product and its earlier versions for 50 years, and would recommend it for any wooden boat. Covers beautifully, easy to apply, and very easy to touchup between coats.

Z-Spar High Gloss Black
We used the high gloss black as a waterline stripe on our Florida based 34' sailboat. I did not add thinner and the 98deg day caused the paint not to "flow" as much as I wanted. It was applied with a small foam roller. If I had thinned it down, as specified in the instructions,,,,, it would have given me the sprayed look I wanted. It still is an impressive finish and will not be redone.

I used to use Petit Easypoxy which is very good, but I had heard very good things about Z-spar and wanted to give it a try. I was not dissappointed, Z-spar flowed out nicely after brushing on. I experimented by using the roller then tip off method on one part of the boat and just brushing on another. The brushed part looked as good or better. And the semi gloss looks great. People have thought the boat was fiberglass, because you can't see the brush strokes. Also, it was a good value compared to other top brands. I will use this from now on.
