The Davis Windex 15 inch long wind indicator vane and assembly is designed for masthead installations on cruiser and ocean racers. Davis Windex wind direction indicators provide highly visible, precise wind information on masts up to 70 feet. This sensitive wind indicator is accurate to wind speeds less than one knot, and has a bird-proof spike that discourages birds intent on landing. Light reflecting tabs improve Windex visibility for night sailing, and can be further illuminated with the DAV 3200 light.

Does the windex 15 have the spike to keep birds off it?
No, that is sold separately
what is in the "entire kit"?
The entire kit includes the vane, arms and threaded mast with nut to secure the vane to the mast.
All the pieces pictures. Everthying you need to attach it to a mast crane. You can also buy some of the pieces individually, as replacement parts.
Problem with a windex is that to be responsive they need to be light and delicate. When your yard unsteps your boat's mast for winter storage and then steps your mast for the sailing season they frequently break the fragile red plastic vane that rotates and indicates wind direction. Accordingly the manufacturer sells just the plastic vane so you don't have the expense of re-buying the whole fixture. So, the 'entire kit' is the whole works you buy and install the first time, after which you can buy just the vane. Damage is honestly not sign of incompetence on part of boatyard. During the unstopping/stepping process the heavy mast is swinging on a hoist or a ladder crane, the boat is rocking, and a thin plastic vane is going to get broken.
the one I purchased has everything shown plus a spike that mounts the top to keep birds from perching in the indicator. It also came with a mounting bar I believe that attaches to the mast on which the indicator can mount.
Contents: wind vane, mast with indicators, mount with set-screw. Mount must be installed at top of main-mast.
Is this the entire assembly or do I need additonal parts and hardware?
It was a replacement - we lost the original to a lightning strike"! We bought a bracket with the original & were able to re-use that. There was no bracket with the unit we bought in 2011. Everything else was there. We have never had any complaint with either of these Windex units. We're full-time liveaboard cruisers rather than racers. If you're a serious racer, you might want to go aloft & fine tune the angle a bit but we have been good with the angle we chose at installation.Hope this helps!
This is the entire kit, complete with mounting bracket. No other parts needed. May require some work at top of mast.
This will only replace the indicator vane. It does not include the mast attachment, post, or indicator arms.
Does this item include all the mounting hardware?
What is not included in this kit is the actual point at the bottom to which this device gets bolted. In the case of my O'Day Javelin this takes the form of an "L" bracket. Davis also makes a product which is suitable for this wind indicator: "Davis J-Base Versatile Mount", available via this website. If you use this mount then the bolt which comes with the Windex 15 will no longer be necessary.
Yes. However, you will need a short standoff, like a tang, attached to your mast and with a 1/4 inch hole for the windex attachment. That is not in the package that I bought.
yes, except screws, or pop rivits to attach bracket to mast
Yes. I purchased this Windex last Feb. and installed it myself while I had my mast in my yard. I am not sure what you mean by all the mounting hardware though. The windex includes the bolt and nuts and pole for simple mounting directly on top of mast, but if you require an extension bar to move the windex away from your antennae on top of mast, then as I recall there is no extension bar in the windex package. That is separate accessory.
Received wrong info on phone
The person I spoke with on the phone told me that "all" brackets including the tube to connect to the mast would be with the "kit" I purchased. The tube was not, so I had to build it myself. But the wind indicator looks to be good quality.
Works As Expected
Easy to install. Works well.
Great little gadgit!
Rather a beginner or a pro, This is a must have gadgit to have on your sailboat mast.
