Pettit Unepoxy Plus is a modified epoxy bottom paint that dries to a hard finish able to withstand season-long use and abuse. It has excellent adhesion to fiberglass, wood and properly primed steel hulls and is compatible over most other previously applied bottom paints.
Providing higher performance without a high price tag, this paint contains 55.6% copper (cuprous oxide), giving it additional antifouling protection. This is a good general use boat bottom paint equally suited to fresh and salt water, as well as for trailered boats.
I have been told that this paint is intended to last only one season. Is this true?I keep the boat in the water all summer and it is stored on its trailer all winter.
It depends on what waters the boat is kept. I have had some success with the bottom paint lasting two seasons with the boat on the hard between the two seasons. The first season the bottom was free of barnacles. However I did notice the bottom paint was definitely less effective in keeping barnacles and slime off the second season. I keep my boat in western Long Island Sound.
Is this paint waterproof or does water penetrate it ?
This paint is used for below waterline applications as a hard shell anti-fouling coating. It is waterproof in the sense that it protects the bottom and does not peel off. I am sure that the bottom is to some degree "wet" as in higher moisture than wood above the waterline, but water does not move easily across the hard finish. It will not peel or blister if applied according to directions.
No it isn't Mike. I used it the summer before last on my old wooden catboat, when I still has leaks, and I can tell you that the boat still leaked after application of this bottom paint. I chose this paint to repel weeds and barnacles, etc.It wasn't intended to be waterproof, but it is not an ablative paint that sloughs off during the season, presenting a continual strong, active surface to repel weeds and barnacles. So it probably is more water resistant than any ablative paints. I was a good bottom paint for Greenwich Bay, but I put on Interlux Act last summer, and it was even better.Nim
This is an anti-fouling paint.I cannot say for sure it is waterproof.
what thinner do I use with this unepoxy plus bottom paint?
Petit makes a special thinner for this paint. I advise you to use it because that way you are dealing with a predictable outcome. I am sure that some of the other thinners around like Interlux 216 will also work, but you will have to experiment a bit.
Is Unepoxy plus compatible over Trinidad SR??
Yes Unepoxy can be applied over Trinidad SR.
I would buy it again, but it took me forever to stir it.
Covered great. Looks great. Just wished I could have had it shaken with a machine. Literally took me 20-30 minutes to mix it properly.
make sure you strain paint my qts. had hard paint chips in but otherwise great, went with 3 med. coats, thought it woulds be darker
