SURFACE PREPARATION: Surface must always be clean, dry and properly prepared prior to painting. Failure to do so will lead to eventually blistering and/or peeling. All sanded surfaces must be wiped clean with a dewaxer to remove sanding residue.
GENERAL APPLICATION: For use on boats below the true waterline. Can be brushed or rolled on fiberglass, wood, steel and previously painted surfaces per application system below. Do not use on aluminum. Apply at least two coats for best performance as the life of the paint is proportional to the number of coats applied. Mix thoroughly and stir continuously while using.

The specification sheet shows under Physical properties showsSeasonal Protection: MultiLaunch Window: Within 2 weeks of painting.This causes me to question the possible conflict of the two specifications.If we pull the boat for the winter do we lose the multi season properties based on the boat being out of the water? This is a great lakes boat.
The two week window only applies to the first launch after applying the paint. Many good ablative paints can dry out over the winter and then go for another seasonHowever, this paint was a total failure on my boat in Sandy Hook Bay, New Jersey. Fouled heavily before the first season was over. Will not use it again.
That's a great question, that I myself have asked. It did pretty well inBuzzards Bay last year, but I assume when they say to launch within 2 weeksthat they mean it's only Multi-season if you leave your boat in the water,
Hi Jamestown and hi Bob, I can and will answer your question as far as my 27' Boston Whaler being in salt water in the Northeast!Â I tryed this bottom paint starting 2 years ago. It has far surpassed my expectations for it keeping the bottom clean and Barnacle free! The only area I had any problem was at the scum line just above the boat stripe but this washed off after hauling easily!Launched the 2nd year and the only area I repainted was the waterline area! The Boat came out of the water just as clean as the year before! I love this bottom paint and I know for a fact that the Northeast water conditions are much harder to control than in fresh water...thats my take! Good luck Bob.Â
Hi Tom, no conflict between specifications. After applying new paint, or after the boat is hauled, you have roughly 2 weeks before the cuprous oxide in the paint forms an oxide 'skin' on the paint. The resin system and biocide combination allows the paint to be reactivated by very lightly sanding, or scuffing with a light abrasive such as a Scotchbrite pad, either within 2 weeks of launching, or after the boat has been launched to reactivate the biocide in the paint. Depending on fouling in an area and boat usage, we recommend 1-2 coats of Spartan per season.

The launch window for Spartan Bottom paint is within 2 weeks. If the boat isn't launched within that time and goes to, say, 1 month, what effect does that have on the paint? What should I do if that happens?

The biocide in Spartan is the cuprous oxide, which after about 2 weeks of not being submerged, becomes oxidized, preventing the copper from being an active biocide. The quick way to fix this is to lightly sand or scuff, even with a Scotchbrite pad before commissioning the boat, or a light scuff with an abrasive type pad right after the boat goes in. This will in effect, reactivate the paint.

Hello, I am absolutely new to refinishing fiberglass. I have a Seadoo with a yucky 1990's teal hull. I am wanting to repaint the hull black. I need some help!Is this the right paint to use on a fiberglass PWC hull?Other than sanding the original hull/clear coat down, is there additional prep I need to do to the surface before painting? Any help is greatly appreciated. Total Newbie!
There are many great paints that will brighten up your seadoo hull, but this isn't one of them. This paint is an anti-fouling paint for the bottom of boats that stay in the waterLook at their Wet Edge topside paint.Their products are excellent and they will help you with your projectRemember 90% of the project is in surface prep.Have fun.Garrett
Bottom paints are intended to be applied to areas of a boat that arecontinuously submerged, as they are formulated to stop or resist marinegrowth. A PWC will usually not be left in the water, so bottom paint is notappropriate, and a waste of money.A better choice would be a high quality epoxy or urethane paint. A hardpaint would resist the inevitable abrasion damage from trailering, orbeaching. Two coats of the primer recommended for the chosen paint willensure the finish coat will perform.As for surface prep, the existing gelcoat should be scuffed up, so theprimer will key. Solutions are available that can be applied to allow goodadhesion.So, decide on the finish paint, buy the primer for that paint, prepare thesurface for that primer, apply the primer, lightly sand the primer to asmooth surface, and apply the finish paint. Applying with fine nap rollerswill probably give you the best results.Jim
This product is not designed for use above the waterline. It is designed for constant immersion in the water to prevent marine growth. You want to get a topside type paint for your application, such as Wet Edge Topside Paint. Topside just refers to above the waterline.

Totalboat Spartan applicable over JD Select . . compatibility?
I have used TotalBoat Spartan bottom paint with good results, but I applied it over Interlux Micron, not JD Select. Therefore, I cannot comment on the compatibility with that product.

My boat was in the Wareham, Ma Weweantic river . Brackish water. This river is very rich with organic material , a good environment for barnacles and slime. I painted by power catamaran with spartan paint last August , haul out Oct 31 only only needed light washing with hose and bush. Spartan ablative bottom paint is good for 1 1/2 seasons. . Instructions say to abrade surface with 3m maroon pad. Now the paint or surface is ready for another season. My question is after abrading the spartan paint how long can I wait to launch in the river?

I will be painting this boat for the first time this spring. The hull has never been painted, still gell coat. Should the hull be barrier coated? Next question I have is the boat has 2 bravo 3 outdrives. What works the best on the drives.All my other boats have been lift kept so this is the first boat I ve bottom painted. Just doing my homework so I get it right the first time.Thanks
If the boat is going to be kept in the water then a barrier coat is a good idea, it will prevent blisters down the road. Take a look at our TotalBoat Outdrive AF Antifouling Paint.
I will be painting a Rinker 334. 34 foot hull 12 foot beam. I will be putting on 2 coats. How many gallons do you estimate it will take?
Two gallons should do 2 coats.
How many gallons would it take roughly to paint a 17.5 ft, wrap windshield/console, sea hunt with two coats?
1 to 1.5 gallons
2 gallons would be plenty to do 2 coats. It is a great product. Having good results in the lower Chesapeake Bay.
1 gallon should leave you some extra.
I have used Spartan for the last two years now - very happy with it. I get two coats out of a gallon on my Cal 29 which is 24' LWL (fin keel)
Do I have to remove the old bottom paint?
I did not remove the old paint. I did have the bottom power washed and I sanded / cleaned any areas the power washing missed. The paint has been on now for 2 months, and is holding up well.
If the old paint is sticking just clean it, maybe a light scrub, and paint over it. Make sure you get off any loose paint.
No, Power washing the bottom paint is enough. I am on the 2nd season for your paint and still clean.

Boat is in St Johns River and never moves. One quick coat is laststill three years. Very happy with performance

Very impressed with the TotalBoat Spartan. My boat has been in a slip since April and is used a couple of times per week. Pulled out yesterday to do some maintenance work and was amazed at how clean the bottom was. A little slime on the side that gets sun (washed off with a quick powerwashing), dock side was totally clean. Very impressed with how well this paint has held up.

I love in SE GA and needed something to put on my 24ft Chaparral and one gallon was more then enough. applied a heavy first coat and will run back and touch up some more areas where i see fit. Good multi season product.

The bottom paint went on really easy and nicely i was surprised at the coverage i was able to get -with other paints in the past i took 1.5 gallons to give it 2 coats , With this paint i still have one fifth (1/5) of the can left....
TotalBoat Spartan Bottom Paint
This is my 3rd time buying this bottom paint and it continues to work great keeping the boat free of growth. The paint is easy to apply, goes on smooth. JD had the paint in stock and arrived quickly. I like that this paint comes with a kit which includes, coveralls, breathing mask and painting supplies. The paint is difficult to remove from skin and impossible from clothes so the coveralls are important.
This paint really worked well on my houseboat last year! My boats engines are not working so the boat was at the dock all summer, but this paint held up very well. Much better than any other bottom paint I've used. Definitely worth the price. However, be aware it goes on thick so I ended up using more than expected for 2 coats.
The product worked fine; the shipping was inconsistent.
I've ordered two batches of four gallons of this bottom paint to stock up for hauling my boat. The first batch was impressively packed, actually triple packed to protect the heavy one gallon cans. The second shipment was so poorly packed the single case with a single line of tape fell apart as it was being lifted in the delivery truck. All four cans were dented, but fortunately didn't leak. They will have to be mixed by hand, are too deformed to mix in a shaker. Also no roller kits were received, although they were listed on the shipping invoice. Quite a disappointment. Would only recommend this if future shipments meet the quality of that first shipment.
