TotalBoat Spartan High-Copper Ablative Bottom Paint

TotalBoat Spartan is a multi-season antifouling bottom paint that provides excellent protection in both salt & fresh water. The constant exposure of new paint film to the water continuously releases biocides that protect the hull against barnacles, algae & hydroids.

Spartan's ablative copolymer base contains 45% copper and renders a smooth finish with a high level of durability and abrasion resistance. For universal application over all types of properly prepared bottom paints (except aluminum). For use on fast fiberglass boats, as well as wood and steel hulls.

Available in Blue and Black, in quart and gallon sizes; Red and Teal in gallons only.

Buy a Gallon and get a free roller & metal tray kit, paint suit, abrasive pad, 1 pair latex gloves, & 2 wooden stir sticks.

Buy a Quart and receive a pair of latex gloves, abrasive pad, & a 10" stir stick.

SURFACE PREPARATION: Surface must always be clean, dry and properly prepared prior to painting. Failure to do so will lead to eventually blistering and/or peeling. All sanded surfaces must be wiped clean with a dewaxer to remove sanding residue.

GENERAL APPLICATION: For use on boats below the true waterline. Can be brushed or rolled on fiberglass, wood, steel and previously painted surfaces per application system below. Do not use on aluminum. Apply at least two coats for best performance as the life of the paint is proportional to the number of coats applied. Mix thoroughly and stir continuously while using.

In previous season I have used a high copper (70%) competitor due to high barnacle growth and weed fouling in my mooring location (Navesink river, NJ). This season was going to be short for me due to various familial engagements so I though I'd try 'Spartan' as it is considerably cheaper and if it didn't work I haven't lost too much.

Application was easy, although paint is quite runny so could be messy although the flipside to that is it made it easy to get a good stir going to agitate the active ingredients.

One Gallon (black) covered two coats for me - (24' lwl, fin keel 5' draft)

During the season I found no issues with barnacles or weed but slime build up was quite high - easy enough to brush off.

On pulling 'Destiny' for the winter I could see the full results, the hull and keel were all still clear of barnacles and weed except for the last 6" of the keel where I settle in the mud at low tide, the abrasion here must have rubbed the paint off and I did have a fair number of barnacles so I think it safe to say the evidence shows the paint worked!

Will I be using it for the 2016 season? - absolutely!

**** Fours stars only because of the slime but otherwise would have been 5*

product poured readily with little mixing solvents kept the copper blended with the paint without a thick deposit of copper on the bottom of the can like many other ablative anti-fouling products.

Comments about TotalBoat Spartan High-Copper Ablative Bottom Paint:

Two of the first three gallons we ordered were so damaged in shipping they never arrived, but we liked the real person at Jamestown who called us and handled our order and the we liked how the first gallon rolled out. So we reordered two gallons and waited a week and they arrived in good order, along with two more "pillsbury doughboy" white Tyvek suits, rollers and trays. The three gallons gave our Fastnet 45 two coats. It looks great now, but we're interested in how it lasts and how it works over time.
Nice people, personal attention to detail, good prices. Thumbs up!

The shipping carrier was pretty rough in handling the gallon paint can, and could have caused a problem if the gallon container broke. The lid was sealed and no issue, but the bottom of the can was dented and deformed by the carrier's rough handling.
