TotalBoat Rust Primer converts rust and prepares metals to be primed and painted. Use it on new metal for superior paint adhesion. Its unique, phosphoric acid-based formula is thin for easy application and excellent coverage of over 500 sq ft per gallon. Use it on just about any metal in high moisture, high humidity environments. It's perfect for marine engines and trailers.
TotalBoat Rust Primer is incredibly easy to use: First, use a wire brush to remove accumulated dirt, grease, loose paint and large rust flakes. Then brush the primer on. The metal will turn black to indicate the chemical change. Let dry. Simply brush off any dried residue and the surface will be ready for primer.
Available in Quart and Gallon sizes.

I have a cast iron keel on my sail boat. Can I use epoxy primer on top of Total Boat rust Primer?
Yes, this is a great first step to use before encapsulating your keel in an epoxy primer.

What is the difference between this product and Ospho? Obviously, price. Is it less concentrated? I've been using Ospho for years. Why would I want to buy this instead? Thanks
The only difference is price and color.

Can this product be used on steel and aluminum or is this better for a specific type of metal?
Works best on iron and steel. For aluminum use Totalboat Aluminum Boat Etch Wash
What is the shelf life expectancy of the rust remover once it has been opened and resealed? Thanks, 13Dan
It should last quite a while, more than a year.
Which will provide superior long term rust protection, epoxy over the conversion coating, or epoxy directly on the wire brushed and cleaned steel? Thanks
Thanks Rick. My question then is, will epoxy adhere better, as well or worse to the converted surface than to the steel surface, albeit with residual rust. I have had excellent results with Gluvit alone over rusty steel, and am hesitant to diminish adhesion whatsoever.
I've used it on rusted steel, then applied epoxy resin and cloth on it and it sealed up really well. My thinking was that if you are able to seal the steel first it will prevent any moisture and rust under the epoxy if the bond fails.
Does this coating bond to the existing paint like a primer? Does one just scuff it with sand paper when dry like you would a primer before top coat? Thanks Dave
No, it converts rust into an Iron phosphate. It won't do anything to any existing paint.
Works as advertised, pleased
Used it on braces and u bolts on boat trailer and repainted
Yes I would purchase again
Has been to cold to use this product. I have no doubts how good it is.

This stuff makes you wish you had more rust to be treated! (Even if I did use it on the motorcycle that's my boat transportation)
I usually buy OSPHO and thought I would try the JD brand. It seems to work the same and costs less. It's worth having a bottle of this around the house. Treating rust with one of these compounds before painting etc. makes the steel last longer, requiring less maintenance in the future. Wear gloves and eye protection. It's phosphoric acid. I put on two coats a day apart.
I would buy this agin
Seems to work just have to be careful to not use in spots you cant brush the white powder off before painting.
Very Good Product at a Very Good Price
Get a few cheap paint brushes and paint on small areas to save money. Spray on larger areas to make it easier.
