Product Details

Kevlar is a high tensile strength and high modulus composite fabric that is great for canoes, kayaks, and racing shells where maximum strength and minimal weight are critical. Impact tear and penetration resistance is far superior to fiberglass. 9 oz, 58" wide. Twill weave kevlar cloth drapes around corners easier than regular kevlar cloth, and twill weave also wets out better than plain weave kevlar. Twill weave is a basic pattern discernible by a diagonal rib, or twill line. Each end floats over at least two or more consecutive picks enabling a greater number of yarns per unit area than a plain weave, while losing little fabric stability. This type of fabric looks different on one side than on the other. The fabric is .024 in thick.

Works great for composite kayak's

This Aramid product worked perfect in reinforcing the inner walls the kayak im currently constructing. There was no deformation or separation in the material after molding and was excellent at really wetting all the way through the material. Make sure to clear a large workspace when using this product with resin, it seems to find its way all over the place.

Excellent material for canoe

I used this fabric to make a kevlar canoe. The fabric works really well. Don't pull to hard on the fabric when laying up because the twill weave will pull apart. We will be making a couple more canoes and we will be ordering this fabric from JTD again.

Q: null I'm going build a driftboat with 12 mm meranti bottom, I'm coating the inside of the bottom with 6 oz glass topped with dynel, for the outside of the bottom I'm considering kevlar over 10 oz 'glass coated with graphite, but do I even need the 'glass ? also, any thoughts on dynel over that kevlar ? I built a 21' skiff about 9 years ago with 'glass/kevlar/graphite bottom and it's worked pretty well (i bought the kevlar from JD)

A: I don't think there would be much benefit to Dynel over Kevlar. This video series may answer some of your questions about kevlar: https://youtu.be/Sp77t7iOdHk?si=90_u2sZGqzrKgYKd

Q: null Is this Kevlar 29 or Kevlar 49?

A: This is Kevlar 49 which is commonly used for composite reinforcement such as boat building. You can find out more about the kevlar JD sells at this link: https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/product/fiberglass-and-building-materials/kevlar

Q: null How do I cut this 9 oz. material? My Kevlar shears will cut lighter material but they don't cut this stuff.

A: I have a pair of Clauss shears with the #18425 on them. They cut it great. So far they still appear to be like new after cutting 10 or 20 feet of the stuff. they have tiny grooves in the blades that make the difference.

Q: null I need to replace a seat in a patio chair. Can I use this fabric for that? The original fabric is Kevlar.

A: Dody.... You can try. But the type of weave that I received probably would be difficult to keep as a finished looking seat. As you know Kevlar is quite slippery and I feel that the weave would have to be stabilized with some sort of resin (epox?) to keep the individual fibers from fraying and opening up. ....Bill
