Hello Richard, I put this switch into the remote control unit that came with my 1996 johnson 30HP without any trouble. You need to make sure that you put the wires on the correct contact poles in the new switch.

Hi, If you lost the original key and have the number on it, you might try the outboard manufacturer. If it was a key for the replacement ignition switch and have the number on the key, you might contact the manufacturer. If you do need to replace the entire ignition switch, the one sold by Jamestown works well, comes with two keys and is easy to install. I have installed two of them. Hope this helps

It's very easy. All you do is take the switch out of the gear box, match up the letters off the back of the old ignition switch to the new one. reassemble it and it's done.

Answer

I assume your controls need disassembly. My switch was not in the remote. It was in a piece of wood on my dash I suggest you study the parts diagram for your remote. My remote is very corroded and I drilled the heads off two steel screws and I am soaking the screws with oil. My remote is being very stubborn, resisting dis assembly. Good luck Salt water damages these early controls . I had to cut the motor extension to get my motor apart to check the water pump impeller. I now have to buy parts to put the motor back together. I will probably have to buy a new remote throttle and shift.

Answer

My motor is a 1996 30Hp Johnson. The old switch and new one have letters for each terminal. When you removed the wires from the old ignition switch, did you mark what terminal each wire color went to? If so you should hook the wires to the corresponding terminal on the new switch. In case you no longer know what wires go where, try using Google with the following criteria 1996 Johnson 30HP Ignition Switch Wiring Diagram there should be an item from customgheenoe about a 1999 30 Hp Johnson which has information about the wire colors and terminal connections. This reply will not let me actually attach a link to the page. If you are still uncertain where the various wires go, you should really take get the switch installed by a competent outboard mechanic. Mixing up wires can cause expensive damage. Hope this helps

How to wire Sierra MP39760 ignition switch?

Hello, I don't know if I can help since my console already had a switch in it. All I did was take a couple pictures and lable each wire as I disconnected it, making a blue print of which terminal it came from and what color it was. That's all I did and it worked out great. I hope this helps. I also run Amsoil Saber Outboard Pre mix in my 90hp, (took off the VRO pump) very little smoke and great performance!!!
