Question

Marine Grade Stainless is a ridiculous and meaningless description.. is this product 304 or 316 stainless steel?

Asked on 07/15/2018 by Jerry from Corning,

Top Answer

The product description is 18-8 grade which is closest to 304, but has 18% chromium and 8% nickel content. All of our stainless 316 products contain 316 in the product name itself.

Question

I am building a walnut end table and coffee table. I will be using black pipe to construct the legs and supports with the top being walnut. My question is what is the best type of wood screw - I want to use stainless steel and a square or star drive to connect the black pipe wall flange to walnut tops. The tops are 1.5 inches thick. Please help with the screw length and size i.e. #8, 10 etc....??????

I've been using #8 3/4 inch to renovate a vintage trailer. They are and average size screw, go through the aluminum skin easily and the course thread bites into the wood well for a secure fit. In your application you might want to go to heavier screw (what is that a #6?) and 3/4 - 1 inch or so should be a good length as long as you get 3/4 inch into the wood. I would definitely pre-drill the holes and don't over tighten the screws because it will be easy to strip out the holes, the square drives transfer a lot of torque. Hope this will help.
