Is the product recommended to be used with Captains Z spar varnish for spraying application. Pettit also makes 121 spraying thinner. Are these the same?
Asked on 09/10/2012 by UndisclosedI am familar with probably every varnish made and their solvents. I have had to because of all the recent changes caused by EPA and the state of california. The absolutely best high gloss long lasting varnish with a thick or heavy lay up is Z-Spar " Captains Varnish". The best builders of natural wood hand layed up canoes and boats in Canada agree with this statement. The manufacture is Kop-Coat and T-10 and T-8 are the only products to use with this varnish, T-8 for spraying. Oddly enough Kop-Coat marine Group is now part of Petit Paint Division of Rockaway, NJ. The last of the T-8 I pirchased was marked Petit 121 - T-8. It appears to be the same, smells the same but then T-10 does also. T- 8 is the only solvent you can use for spraying this varnish to get it thin enough for proper spraying yet result in thick or heavy lay up while retaining the high gloss. Anything else results in a loss of the proper high gloss finish. You better hope they never change the formula or remove it from the market.
Answered on 09/18/2012 by Ed RicksHi, I used the Spar T-8 with varnish. I think I used the Captains varish because I was looking for the best finish I could find. I sprayed the finish on wicker furniture that is outside and in the sun. The varish sprayed very evenly and the finish has held up very well for two summers (no apparent degredation). So, I would recommend using it.
